Yogyakarta, February 23rd 2019 - Minister of Communication and Information Technology of The Republic of Indonesia – Rudiantara visited the office of Center for Digital Society FISIPOL UGM. The visit was done after Rudiantara attended the event of i-talk as the speaker held by FISIPOL and to take a look at CfDS that got nominated again in two categories for prestigious award WSIS Prize 2019. WSIS Prize is an annual awarding event held by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - an institution under the United Nations that focuses on the field of communications.
On this occasion, Rudiantara saw directly the Digital Intelligence Lab (DI Lab)- a lab managed by CfDS UGM in developing Artificial Intelligent dan Big Data Analytics. Executive Secretary of CfDS – Diah Angendari told that Digital Intelligence Lab is managed for developing digital research methods in social sciences, policy-making based on big data analysis, developing digital talent, development of artificial intelligence for social research, and improving the quality of content.
Moreover, Diah also explained some of the capabilities of the CfDS’ digital lab, “Digital Intelligence Lab is able to do big data analysis, data visualization, real-time social media monitoring, and content reporting”,
Treviliana Putri, manager of DI Lab added that Digital Intelligence Lab has done some researches throughout 2018. First, “Content Analysis of Social Media & Online Media: Disaster Management for the Earthquake in Center Sulawesi by the Government; second, “Content Analysis of Social Media and Online Media: 4 Years of Jokowi’s Government; and third, “Content Analysis of Social Media and Online Media: Annual Meeting IMF World Bank-Bali. Digital Intelligence Lab CfDS UGM aims to develop digital research method in the area of social sciences, decision-making based on big data analysis, development of digital talent, the proliferation of AI’s usage in social research, and enhancement of content quality.
Besides the facility of DI Lab, CfDS UGM also continues in conducting studies, public discussions and policy advocacy regarding the issues of digital society such as digital literacy, cybersecurity, digital economy, and future technology. On doing research, Rudiantara gave a message that CfDS should emphasize on the impact of technology on solving contemporary problems. ‘We should see the pattern, whether the existence of technology can cause any changes on people’s life pattern’, said Rudiantara. Besides, Rudiantara also emphasized the importance of having sociological and anthropological perspectives on researching various kind of digital phenomenon, especially since CfDS itself was built under the scope of social sciences.
Regarding CfDS’ activities in promoting digital literacy for communities, these efforts were once again awarded by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that included CfDS in the 2019 World Summit Prize on Information Society (WSIS) Prize. Multi-Approach Digital Literacy Program and Digital Intelligence Lab CfDS program were two of our main programs that were nominated in the 2019 WSIS Prize. We highly consider the nomination of the CfDS’ programs for the second time as a form of support and hope of the community, so that CfDS UGM can continue to contribute in creating a better digital society.
