Yogyakarta, July 1st, 2019 - Social media has now become one of the medias for the political elite to get closer to society. Seeing this trend, CfDS held a popular research entitled ‘Popularity of The Minister’s Social Media of Jokowi-JK’s Work Cabinet on Monday, July 1st, 2019. This research examines the use of social media and the types of interactions that Jokowi cabinet ministers do in the realm of social media.
The Ministers in the Frame of Social Media
In a research that refers to several number of digital platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Google Trends, and online news, it turns out that not all Ministers have an active role in using social media. Of the 34 Ministers who are the members of the Work Cabinet (President Jokowi’s cabinet name), there are 4 Ministers who do not own and use social media accounts (Twitter and Instagram). Research also shows that age factors do not affect the activity of social media. Evidently, the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Wiranto, who is one of the most senior age in the Work Cabinet, is quite active in social media. Wiranto even included in the 5 most popular Ministers on the Jokowi-JK’s Work Cabinet.
Two of The Most Popular Minister on Social Media are Female
Based on data collected as of May 25th, 2019 (Twitter) and as of June 18th, 2019 (Instagram), The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti became the most popular Minister among the Work Cabinet. Popularity refers to the large number of followers of her Instagram and Twitter social media accounts which reached 3.29 million followers. The Finance Minister Sri Mulyani was ranked second with 1.39 million followers. Some Ministers also have engagement strategies that are quite unique and distinctive. For example, the habit Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi who uses English in most of the social media content she uploads.
Issues Are Affecting Ministers’ Popularity on Social Media
“Many negative reports appeared to The Minister of The Work Cabinet related to Corruption (KPK Preaching), namely Lukman H. Saifuddin, Ignasius Jonan, Imam Nahrawi, Enggartiasto, and Syafruddin. There are also issues related to the Increase in Airline Ticket Prices, namely Budi Karya, Darmin Nasution and Rini Soemarno.” said Treviliana.
Through data analysis provided by Google Trends between March 1 and June 10, 2019, it appears that the Minister's popularity is influenced by the development of an issue. For example, in April 2019, BUMN Minister Rini Soemarno became the most popular name when the issue emerged that Minister Rini Soemarno planned to replace BUMN with a super holding. This finding is interesting considering that Minister Rini does not have a personal social media account.
