Yogyakarta, 19th July 2019 – After the issuance of Indonesian Constitutional Court’s decision on the dispute over the results of the Indonesian 2019 Presidential Election, Jokowi and Prabowo held a meeting on Saturday, 13th July 2019 at the MRT Station on Senayan Jakarta. This moment invited various kind of responses from Indonesian Twitter users, that sought to interpret the meaning behind one of the most iconic moments of the Indonesian 2019 Presidential Election. Seeing this momentum, CfDS held a press conference that is based on CfDS Popular Research entitled ‘Indonesian Twitter User’s Response on the Meeting of Jokowi-Prabowo’, on Friday, 19th July 2019.
The Meeting as A Form of Reconciliation?
In a research that refers to Twitter data during 13th to 16th July 2019, the use of hashtags is one of the indicators in assessing the users’ reactions. Uniquely, in the data mining process that used the keyword ‘Jokowi and/or Prabowo’, the word ‘reconciliation’ was widely used and visible. However, this can not necessarily be interpreted as a narrative that supports the act of reconciliation between the two sides, because some hashtags containing the word ‘reconciliation’ actually contain anti-reconciliation sentiments, such as ‘#RekonsiliasiMbahmu’ or ‘#0p0sisTanpaRek0nsiliasi’. ‘One thing that can be concluded is that there is a tendency for Indonesian Twitter users to identify the meeting with act of reconciliation, both with pro and contra sentiments towards it,’ said Trevilliana Eka Putri as Manager of Digital Intelligence Lab CfDS.
Indonesian Tweets Summed Up in 5 Most Popular Hashtags
From a total 169,238 tweets that was included in the research data, there are 5 most widely used hashtags that were related with the meeting between Jokowi-Prabowo. The five most popular hashtags are: ‘#03PersatuanIndonesia’, '#0p0sisiTanpaRek0nsiliasi', '#AniesBaswedanforPresident', '#KampretAkanTetapBerjuang', '' #RekonsiliasiRasaTerasi'. These hashtags have their own sentiments (both pros and cons) towards the meeting. Several figures with large Twitter followers also enlivened the use of these 5 most popular hashtags, such as Ridwan Kamil with the use of ‘#03PersatuanIndonesia’, or Jonru Ginting with the use of the ‘#0p0sisTanpaRek0nsiliasi'.
Interesting Sentiments From the Use of Hashtags
Based on the ranking of the 5 most popular hashtags, '# 03PersatuanIndonesia' is the most widely used hashtag. This hashtag was identified as a form to support the act of reconciliation between Jokowi and Prabowo. Nevertheless, during July 13th to 16th 2019, there were more ‘anti-reconciliation’ hashtags such ‘#RekonsiliasiRasaTerasi', ‘#0p0sisiTanpaRek0nsiliasi', and ‘#KampretAkanTetapBerjuang'. Paska Darmawan, Digital Intelligence Lab CfDS researcher also added that there were other interesting findings, such as there were a decline in the number of followers of Prabowo's and Gerinda Party’s Twitter account after the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo happened.
