Salatiga, March 5th, 2020 - Nowadays, technological advancement has presented various innovations that produce impacts on human life. The presence of social media, for example, has provided new space in human interaction. With a lot of human interaction that happens in digital space, it is important to also see how humans build their image in digital space. In collaboration with the Faculty of Social and Communication Sciences Satya Wacana Christian University (FISIKOM UKSW), CfDS held its 37th Digitalk series that discussed personal branding in digital era, by also inviting FISIKOM UKSW lecturer, Dewi Kartika Sari, and the president of UGM Student Council in 2018, Obed Kresna, to share their experiences in building personal branding in the digital era. The event that took place in the Auditorium FISIKOM UKSW was held on Thursday, March 5, 2020 (05/03).
The Importance of Personal Branding in The Digital Era
The first session was opened by Dewi Kartika Sari, by explaining the current phenomenon of candidate screening in several companies, which currently considers the digital footprint of candidates' social media. This fact shows how social media has a huge influence on human life. However, Dewi Kartika Sari also stressed that personal branding in the digital space is not only created for the sake of future work purposes. Personal branding on social media can also be one of the ways for us to actualize ourselves through social media, as well as the process of exploring the inner creativity within us. Some tips on building a positive personal brand on social media were also given by Dewi, where the mindset that always wants to learn, consistency, and focus on our own self-uniqueness are some of the keys to build a positive personal brand on social media. At the end of her session, Dewi also emphasized the importance of also having sufficient digital literacy, given that various forms of negative content can also be found on social media.
Authenticity and Consistency Are The Keys of Personal Branding in The Digital Era
Reflecting on his experience while still serving as the president of UGM Student Council, Obed Kresna explained some of the mindsets that we must have in building our self-image on social media. The initial step emphasized by Obed is that we must recognize our own potential and uniqueness while continuing to produce content consistently. Obed believes that with consistency, we will get the recognition that will ultimately lead us to have a certain reputation on social media. The end result of having a reputation affiliated with us is a growing sense of trust from people around us in the self-image we are trying to build on social media. At the end of his presentation, once again Obed emphasized the importance to be authentic, not only in the real world but also in the digital space.
